Course Descriptions

One-Day Basic River Kayaking: You will spend the day on the Metro Hooch learning basic kayaking skills. We meet at the Johnson Ferry North boat ramp and cover paddling principles and safety before getting on the river where we teach basic paddle strokes. After lunch at Powers Island we practice maneuvers such as eddy turns, peel-outs and ferries in moving water and easy rapids. (We furnish 10 foot recreational kayaks or you can use your own boat.) No previous experience is required.

One-Day Basic River Canoeing: This course follow the same format as the Basic River Kayaking course. We teach both tandem and solo canoe techniques. If you want to learn tandem, you should have a partner. Adventure racing partners who demonstrate proficiency will be certified for participation in Odyssey Adventure Racing events. Both the kayak and canoe courses include information on river safety. No previous experience is required.

Weekend Beginner/Novice Whitewater Kayak: On Saturday we go to Lake Acworth where we teach basic strokes, wet exits, assisted rescue and the Eskimo roll. On Sunday we paddle a class II river in north Georgia or North Carolina using these strokes to perform river maneuvers such as ferries, eddy turns, peel-outs, wave surfing and running rapids. We also practice swimming rapids and use of a throw rope. River safety and related topics are covered at opportune times during the weekend. No previous experience is required.

Private Individual and Group Instruction: One-day private kayak and canoe instruction is available at beginning through intermediate levels and can be tailored to meet your specific learning objectives and personal schedule. Lessons can be scheduled on weekdays or weekends. We can also arrange private multi-day clinics for self-organized groups of three or more, including scout troops, friends, families, and co-workers.

Kids’ 5-Day Kayaking Day Camp (Ages 9-14): On Monday and Tuesday, we go Allatoona Lake where we teach wet exits, paddle strokes and the Eskimo roll. On Wednesday, we go to a class I river where we teach river maneuvers and boat control on moving water. On Thursday and Friday we practice these techniques on rivers with up to class II rapids.
