Basic River Kayak and Canoe Classes on the Metro Chattahoochee River
White Water Learning Center of Georgia offers one-day basic river kayak and basic river canoe classes on the Chattahoochee River in Atlanta. These are introductory classes in which we teach basic skills needed to become a competent recreational paddler on lakes and easy rivers. Classes are taught by experienced American Canoe Association-certified instructors.
Course DescriptionsOne-Day Basic River Kayaking: We spend a day on the Metro Hooch teaching basic kayaking skills. The classes begin at the Johnson Ferry North site where we will discuss river safety and paddling principles before putting in on this essentially flat moving water section of river. We will cover basic paddle strokes before stopping for lunch at Cochran Shoals. After lunch we will continue downriver where we will teach boat control in class I rapids. Our take-out point is at Paces Mill where US 41 crosses the river. (We furnish 10 foot recreational kayaks or you can use your own boat.)
One-Day Basic River Canoeing: These classes follow the same format as the Basic River Kayaking course. We teach both tandem and solo canoe techniques. If you need a tandem partner, we will match you with another single paddler. Adventure racing partners who demonstrate proficiency will be certified for participation in Odyssey Adventure Racing events.
Fees
One-day basic courses are $100 per person for tandem canoe and $125 for kayak and solo canoe. Fees include equipment: boat, paddle, PFD (life vest) and water bottle. Please bring a lunch, snacks and beverages. Transportation is not included. We may ask participants to help with vehicle shuttles.
